A PRIL 18

1898: Houston’s Bill Kemmer sets a hitting record that still stands, driving in twelve runs in his team’s 16–10 victory over Fort Worth. Kemmer had two singles and three three-run home runs. The first baseman played seventeen seasons in the minor leagues and appeared in eleven games for Louisville in the National League in 1895.

1898: After three shutout innings by San Antonio pitcher Jake Volz, Galveston explodes for sixteen runs in its final six innings, cruising to a 16–3 victory. Volz walked ten, hit two batters and delivered three wild pitches in taking the loss.

1915: Dode Criss, the Houston Buffs’ regular first baseman, throws the second no-hitter of his career, beating San Antonio 3–0. Criss was one of the league’s greatest all-around players, with a career batting average of .308 in the minors and ninety-three victories as a pitcher.

1947: More than four thousand fans, equipped with cushions and folding chairs, crowd the foul lines of unfinished Mission Stadium to see Beaumont top San Antonio 8–7 in the Missions’ home opener. The ballpark, designed to seat fourteen thousand, was completed five weeks later.

1948: Tulsa collects twenty-seven hits in a 31–1 thrashing of Dallas. Russ Burns connected for three home runs and a triple, scoring six runs and driving in seven. Third baseman Tommy Tatum also drove in seven runs.
